Girls State Article 2009

American Legion Girls State

For more than 60 years the Americanism programs of the American Legion and Auxiliary have helped our young people take full advantage of the chance to develop leadership skills, confidence and poise to make a lasting foundation for success in their personal and professional lives.

Their teachers and counselors recommended these young people. They then compete for positions through an interview process with the Auxiliary. It was a very difficult decision to select the ones to represent Forsyth County as we have such outstanding juniors in our schools.

Five young women from the four Forsyth High Schools are attending the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program at Georgia Southern in Statesboro from June 14th to the 19th

Students for the Girls State will be at Georgia Southern for a week of hands on running a city, county and state government. When they arrive they will be divided into two political parties. They will gain knowledge about our two party system. They will campaign for office, make speeches, hold rallies, hold legislative sessions, write legislative bills, debate issues, and vote. Additional activities include a talent show, journalism, public speaking, and patriotic ceremonies, learning about our judicial system and meeting our Georgia State Officials. The girls who win the two Senate seats will go to Girls Nations and Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., where for one week in July, they will learn how our federal government operates. They will have an opportunity to meet the President of the United States.

The programs objectives are structured to meet the following objectives:

- develop leadership and pride in American citizens

- educate citizens in our system of government

- instill a greater understanding of American traditions

- stimulate a desire to maintain our democratic government process

Our Auxiliary funds the program with additional support from others. Mr.Tommy Bagwell of American Protein supported two students at North Forsyth High School.

Our auxiliary will host an Orientation Tea on May 17th for the girls and their parents to give them information and to answer any questions they may have about the week long program. Additional information can be found at the www.georgiagirlsstate.org
