
ORATORICAL
The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

FOR WINNING 2010 Post 307 ORACTORICAL CONTEST
American Legion Oratorical Contest Students grade 9 - 12 of Forsyth County were invited by Post #307 of the American Legion to compete in their 2010 Annual High School Oratorical Contest: A Constitutional Speech Contest. The local Post 307 contest was conducted Monday 8 February,2010, 2009 at the National Guard Armory on Route 20 in Cumming. The contest is based on two separate orations. The subject of the Prepared Oration is based on the Constitution of the United States and is the original effort of each contestant. The purpose of the Assigned Topics is to test the speaker’s knowledge of the Articles of the Constitution, duties and obligations of citizens to our government. The Winner in 2009 was Mary Matia, of Pinecrest Academy. In 2008 the winner was Ashley Buttman who went onto finish 2nd place in the National Contest winning over $20,000 in cash and scholarship prizes.
The 2010 Post 307 winner is Tabitha Clark who represented Post 307 at the District.9 Contest 20thFebruary, 2010 at Alpharetta Post 201, also won the Distrcict 9 contest. Tabitha is an 11th grade student at the Private Heritage Academy in Buford, GA.
Tabitha represented the District at the Area 3 Contest at Loganville Post 233 on 27 February. While not winning the Area contest Tabitha did finish among the top contestants and received several hundred dollars for winning the Post, District,and Area level contests. At each level Post, District, Area and Department there are scholarships awarded to the top 3 winners. The National Final Contest is in April in Indianapolis, Indiana. $138,000 of scholarships will go to the State Winners at the National Contest. The top Department and National winner will receive approximately $23,000.00 in scholoarship monies. The American Legion has awarded over 3 million dollars in scholarships since 1938, says Post Oratorical Chairman, Nona Hamilton.
